NINKASI BREWING APPAREL
Overview
I worked with Ninkasi Brewing Company via McKenzie SewOn to develop an apparel line of summer and fall items. They were looking for something fun and colorful to spruce up the retail space and communicate the personality of their beers. These we created to promote their new Raspberry Lime Ale and Pilsner Cold Fermented Lager. The designs where hand drawn. The shirts where screen printed using index process separation method.

Challenges
I was given free rein to developing new concepts for these sub-brands. Ninkasi was open to more experimental and interesting ideas but wanted to make sure the story of each beer was somehow incorporated into the final designs. I also had to consider how to make these colorful while still being cost effective when screen printed on various types of apparel.
For the Brightberry concept we decided to utilize the raspberry and lime ingredients as the main focal points in the illustration with the juices flowing over the text. For the fermented lager we incorporated rain drops on an illustrated hop based inspired by the description of the lager on Ninkasi’s website and packaging.
Process
All of the design and illustration work was done in Procreate on an iPad Pro with Apple Pencil and the separations where done in adobe photoshop and illustrator. I started out sketching the basic shapes and layout getting a feel for the flow of the elements. I then added in the text which was created in adobe illustrator and worked the hand drawn elements around those so that the everything felt like it went together.
The artworks where separated in photoshop using a method called index separations. Six to eight colors where used in each illustration. Index color separations use square pixels of the same size, rather than halftone dots, to create color shading.
